Advanced Biology Investigation #7, Cell Division, Mitosis and Meiosis
Advanced Biology Investigation 7 on cell division for 32 students in 8 groups, covering the cellular steps of DNA replication, mitosis and meiosis. Students examine mitosis stages in prepared plant root tips and study crossing over in meiosis using Sordaria cultures. Contents: sterile disposable scalpels, forceps, sterile Petri dishes, pipettes, Sordaria agar and mating agar, microscope slides, coverslips, sand, plastic cups, sterile disposable inoculating loops, 6 M hydrochloric acid and 1% toluidine blue. Supply distilled water, a microwave or hot water bath and garlic cloves; optional extras are lectin (phytohaemagglutinin), pH buffers, NaCl, plant hormones such as indole acetic acid or kinetin, herbicides or anything else students think may affect mitosis in garlic root tips. It meets AP Science Practices 1, 5, 6 and 7 and Big Idea 3; instructions included. Ships under the small-quantity exemption (49 CFR 173.4) and carries a California Proposition 65 warning. 6 M HCl is corrosive; wear goggles and gloves and read the SDS.
