Advanced Biology Investigation #12, Fruit Fly Behavior
Advanced Biology Investigation 12 on fruit fly behaviour for up to 8 groups. In a choice chamber, students test whether flies are drawn to or repelled by the smell of chemicals and foods that help them survive, look for patterns and then design their own follow-up experiment. Contents: 30 mL each of ethyl alcohol, deionised water, 5% ammonia and vinegar, fruit fly vials, student exercise copymasters and a voucher, redeemable by fax, phone or e-mail, for live fruit fly cultures. Supply dissecting microscopes, funnels and foods such as yeast, peanut butter, ketchup, jelly, salad dressing, apples, bananas and capers; other condiments, coloured acetate sheets or household cleaners are optional. It meets AP Science Practices 1, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 and Big Idea 4. Ships under the small-quantity exemption (49 CFR 173.4) and carries a California Proposition 65 warning. Use ammonia with ventilation and read the SDS.
