Hero's Engine, Eolipile
This working glass model recreates the earliest type of steam turbine, often called Hero's engine. A borosilicate glass bulb about 70 mm across carries two side arms, each turned through a right angle and drawn out into a jet at its tip. The bulb sits on a metal stand that lets it spin freely about a horizontal axis. Put roughly 25-30 mL of water in the bulb and heat it to boiling; the steam escaping from the jets makes the bulb turn rapidly. The unit stands 10 inches tall, with 5 to 6.5 inches of space below the bulb for a gas burner. It is supplied assembled on its stand; the burner is not included.
